Best suited for: Intermediate and Experienced riders.

What we love about it: The proximity, being so close to a major city and not that far from Johannesburg (30-40 minute drive) and the flow trails! But more than those two elements, Wolwespruit is one of the most complete mountain bike trails parks in South Africa.

The trails:

There are four distinct sections of trail at Wolwespruit. They are:

  • Wolfpack Safari: 10km (Green grading)
  • Wolf Trek: 10km (Blue grading)
  • Werewolf Traverse: 3km (Black grading)
  • Whole Trail: 23km (Blue grading)

In the heart of Pretoria is Wolwespruit Mountain Bike Trails Park. A relatively small piece of land next to the N1 Freeway at the Rigel Road offramp that offers a lot more than you expect.

Wolwespruit initially started out as a country trail venue, catering for marathon and XCO mountain bikers. But over time it has added a large pump track and a dedicated jump line, both features of a bike park. More recently, the owners invested significantly in the building of four gravity lines, which make Wolwespruit one of just three parks in Gauteng that appeals to gravity riders.

The best natural feature of Wolwespruit is the gradient. Situated on a hillside, it offers a good volume of climbing and generous amount of descending. The four gravity lines would be classified more as flow lines than jump lines, although there are plenty of low-risk jumps for those keen on getting some air.

Additional Trail Facts

The signage is insufficient. It’s too small on the mountain bike trails and can be confusing as there are also running/hiking trails at the venue with their own similar signage (February 2022).

The trails are graded according to IMBA’s system, with Green, Blue and Black trails.

Off The Bike

The location is incredibly established with a number of restaurants and family activities as well as a Trek Bike Shop.

Wolwespruit offers probably the widest range of mountain bike riding variety in Gauteng and is highly recommended if you’re into fun times rather than fast times or long-distance rides! It is also a really good place to train if you’re looking for fitness and strength too and is one of the safest parks from a security perspective.

Awesome singletrack throughout the trail. Lots of forest singletrack at the bottom section. Signage is decent. Good climbing to get the heart rate going which takes you to the top section, this is where you will find the best flow line in Gauteng!!! Smooth lines, well built jumps and huge berms. Trails are constantly maintained and updated. Post ride venue at Pltfrm is a vibey place to chill out after a great ride. High recommend this place. Plenty of parking and very safe.

Wolwespruit MTB Park has an amazing variety of trails to suit riders of all skill levels. The flow lines at the top of the hill and the big jump line are a standout feature and one of the best in Gauteng. The trails are well maintained and new features are always being added. Cross country riders and enduro/freeriders alike will find something that interests them at Wolwespruit.

Wolwespruit has quickly become my go to trails for technical riding. The trails gives a proper workout and tests you in every aspect of mountain biking. Although the trails is very technical the trail building team has done a lot of work to make the trails ridable for all with different route options.

With rider safety being such an issue, wolwespruit offers almost everything. Not just is it very safe to ride there but it also offers a wide variety of options like limbing, flowing trails, technical sections, jump lines etc. Aaaaand a hospital nearby if things go south 😂

Only for intermediate and advanced riders, great flow tracks and hill training. Difficult to do more than about 25km distance but such a good workout. Can do a good training session in an hour's ride. Amazing food!

Excellent trails!!!, luckily I went in a bunch with 2 seasoned Wolwespruit riders who knew most of the time how to read to signage on the green side. My previous occasions there on 2018 and 2019 resulted in me getting stuck on the same loop or skipping some fun green loop obstacles. We then skipped over to the blue trail full of excitement, steep, sharp climbs an for my first time some harrowing downhill sections that again thanks to some of the group in front, showed me how to handle and attack each obstacle with confidence. Definitely not a course for newbies, I had a lot more fun this time, and not a trail for sissies, sometime the only way down is on your bike….

A proper workout - good place to practice your technical skills. Lot of climbing (blue). Green route signage was confusing, so we ended up going in circles.

A wide variety of trails with some decent climbs for a Gauteng trail. From fast and smooth flow lines (kids friendly to advanced) to rocky single track and even jump lines. It's a proper mountain bike trail.
