Best suited for: Intermediate and Experienced riders.
What we love about it: The proximity, being so close to a major city and not that far from Johannesburg (30-40 minute drive) and the flow trails! But more than those two elements, Wolwespruit is one of the most complete mountain bike trails parks in South Africa.
The trails:
There are four distinct sections of trail at Wolwespruit. They are:
In the heart of Pretoria is Wolwespruit Mountain Bike Trails Park. A relatively small piece of land next to the N1 Freeway at the Rigel Road offramp that offers a lot more than you expect.
Wolwespruit initially started out as a country trail venue, catering for marathon and XCO mountain bikers. But over time it has added a large pump track and a dedicated jump line, both features of a bike park. More recently, the owners invested significantly in the building of four gravity lines, which make Wolwespruit one of just three parks in Gauteng that appeals to gravity riders.
The best natural feature of Wolwespruit is the gradient. Situated on a hillside, it offers a good volume of climbing and generous amount of descending. The four gravity lines would be classified more as flow lines than jump lines, although there are plenty of low-risk jumps for those keen on getting some air.
The signage is insufficient. It’s too small on the mountain bike trails and can be confusing as there are also running/hiking trails at the venue with their own similar signage (February 2022).
The trails are graded according to IMBA’s system, with Green, Blue and Black trails.
The location is incredibly established with a number of restaurants and family activities as well as a Trek Bike Shop.
Wolwespruit offers probably the widest range of mountain bike riding variety in Gauteng and is highly recommended if you’re into fun times rather than fast times or long-distance rides! It is also a really good place to train if you’re looking for fitness and strength too and is one of the safest parks from a security perspective.
