4/5
Best suited for: Intermediate and Experienced riders
What we love about it: Rhebokskloof is one of four main trail heads for the Paarl Adventure Trails network. If you’re super fit and strong, you could try and ride the whole network in two days, but it will likely take you longer. That’s why it’s been segmented around the Paarl Mountain so that you can sample a bit of each section in 2-4 hour chunks. Rhebokskloof is a wine farm set against some superb gradient and dramatic rock on the northern slopes of Paarl Mountain.
It’s essentially a wine farm that’s more than 150 years old that now has an established a rather exceptional mountain bike trails network.
The trails:
There’s some tame, mellow trails low down at Rhebokskloof, but the venue really is all about the Blue and Red routes, which have made this one of the most exciting trails parks in the country. More recently, the new Purple route has been added, which is simply superb!
The trails at Rhebokskloof include:
Rhebokskloof Yellow: 3km
Rhebokskloof Blue: 13km
Rhebokskloof Red: 25km
Rhebokskloof Purple: 18km
Rhebokskloof Blue + Purple: 35km
The Yellow, Green and Blue trails seem very short, but with the combination of elevation on what is a generously sloped piece of land, are sufficiently challenging for beginners and youngsters.
As with the rest of the Paarl Adventure Trails network, the singletrack at Rhebokskloof has been very well built so that you always feel a good level of control, even at speed. The climbing is generally done gradually with switchbacks that are thoughtfully designed, while the twisty, bermed descents are super fun and just reward. The flow is generally very good and a clear sign of a discerning trailbuilder. As a bonus, the scenery in almost every direction is stunning.
The signage is good, but was due to be updated in January 2022 with new signage.
The trails aren’t specifically graded, but are predominantly blue and green trails according to Trailforks. We agree.
There’s an established restaurant and a pizzeria at Rhebokskloof. The wine tasting is popular and there are options for picnics, quad biking and horse riding.
The combination of elevation, scenery, thoughtfully laid-out, well-built trails, rock features, flow and sheer volume of stimulating singletrack, make Rhebokskloof one of the best mountain bike trails in South Africa for intermediate and experienced riders.
