Northern Farm Mountain Bike Trails, located in Diepsloot Nature Reserve, Gauteng, is one of the best mountain bike trails to experience in SA.

Best suited for:

Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced riders.

What we love about it:

Everyone that rides a mountain bike at Northern Farm can have a stimulating experience. It’s probably the best trail park in Gauteng for beginners. That is to say; it’s not lacking in courses that challenge intermediate and experienced riders. The Jukskei River flows along its western boundary. As a result, it is highly photogenic and a haven for various birds, boasting more than 270 species. There are a few dams on the reserve.

The generally gentle gradient makes it very manageable for even the most nervous newcomers. The large car park, friendly restaurant, and bike wash staff make everything seem uncomplicated.

Over 120km of marked and maintained mountain bike trail makes up the Northern Farm mountain bike trails on the 25000ha piece of land, just a 20 minute-drive from Fourways in the north of Johannesburg. There’s a blend of gravel roads, jeep track and singletrack, which deliver a significant variety of riding experiences. The high volume of singletrack has been well thought out and takes riders on long segments of twisting journeys through a range of gradients and terrain, which are equal part challenge and reward.

Additional Trail Facts

Signage

The signage is generally good and well-placed colour arrows are used to denote trail name (colour) and direction.

Grading

As with many South African trails parks, the trails aren’t graded according to IMBA’s skill level grading system. Northern Farm is listed on Trailforks though, where it’s trails are all either marked Green or Blue.

Trails

There are a total of five trails as follows:

Pink Route: 8km

Green Route:12km

Blue Route: 22km

Red Route: 34km

Black Route: 68km

Off the bike

There’s a small kitchen that makes great breakfast/brunch snacks, coffee and sells other cooldrinks – always welcome after a long ride there. The bike wash is excellent and costs R30. Northern Farm as a whole is well managed to cater for the hiking, trail running, birding, equestrian and moto-x communities, none of which seem to encroach on each other.

Summary

Northern Farm is a breath of fresh air, offering a vast trail network for all levels of mountain biker less than half an hour from the city hustle of Johannesburg. There are very few trails parks that can genuinely claim to offer great riding for all levels of mountain biker, but Northern Farm is one of them. It’s just a pity it’s only open on weekends and public holidays.

Cost

R60 per adult; R500 for a 10-entry card and R700 for a 20-entry card.

Looks like a lot of work has gone into the farm to get it ready for the new season. Routes are well marked - I noticed a missing sign on Blue a month ago that I see has been replaced. A lot of the fields have been burnt so we should see lots of new green growth soon, with the dams looking really healthy. Paying and "checking in" have moved from the entrance close to the road to the bike wash kiosk. You still get your numbered board and cable ties on the way in. You get an exit card after paying which you need to give back when you exit (to the guys who give you the numbered board). Talking points: Parking is very safe Basic toilets are available Paid bike wash for your post ride clean Seriously good coffee by Luther Good food options

Safe park, varied level of riding from kids, beginners to technical and good distances. The trails change in condition due to weather and as it is a working farm. Will keep you on your toes!

Northern farms is a gem in Gauteng as it is a very versatile ground that can get you started on your bicycle as a non-technical and flatter environment but can also make you sweat with the fast switchbacks and punchy climbs on the red and black routes. There is a small tuck shop with some refreshments, good coffee and really good breakfast rolls. The bike wash is also super handy as the low laying grounds hold water and you are bound to find some mud. These are within a nice grassy setting with some benches and tables.

Great, well-maintained trails with varying degrees of technicality. The single track downhills are the best, but the twists of the enchanted forest are also great!

Well maintained (considering what most of the other trails in Gauteng look like at the moment)

I ride this traill every Saturday. It rains a lot around here and causes the trial to be very overgrown at times but the maintenance in this park is amazing. They constantly cut down trees and cleanup. This is a great moutainnike Park as it has something for everyone. The advance rider looking for technical and far routes you can get it here.A easy ride for you and your children on a Sunday is also available.

Always fun ridding at Northern Farm even after the rains, the trails are a little damaged and there is still a lot of water puddles around.

As usual Northern Farms delivers a good riding experience. Very similar to Taroko trails you able to get training distance as well as a bit of technical on their single track sections.
