Cradle Moon Mountain Bike Trails, located in Johannesburg, Gauteng, is one of the best mountain bike trails to experience in SA.

Best suited for:

Intermediate and Experienced riders

What we love about it:

Cradle Moon is one of those country venues not far from the city that seems to have everything, including mountain biking. The large dam. The game. The restaurant deck on the dam wall. The beach (with natural beach sand). The rondavel accommodation. The restaurants. The swimming pool. However, that’s peripheral to the mountain bike trails, predominantly singletrack and offer a range of gradients, surfaces, and distances.

In the foothills of the Zwartkop mountain, this hidden gem is the most sought-after environmental activity and hospitality destination on Johannesburg’s outskirts. Subsequently, great care has been taken to preserve the original character’s peculiarities while undergoing extensive restorations.

With over 50 kilometres of mountain biking and running trails, you are guaranteed a secure and memorable experience for every level of athlete. So, with varied terrain from forests to mountains and being home to over 20 species of wild animals, including rhinos, Cradle Moon is unique.

There are four main Cradle Moon mountain bike trails – Pink, Blue, Yellow and Red. In short, you can ride them separately or link them for a longer, more challenging ride.

Additional Trail Facts

Signage

The signage is generally good. There are a few points on the Yellow Route that may be a bit confusing on your first ride there though (there is a shorter option on Yellow).

Grading

The trails aren’t graded. But as a general guide, the Pink is ideal for beginners, Blue and Yellow for Intermediate and the Red for experienced/stronger riders.

Trails

Pink – 5km

Blue – 10km with 171m ascent

Yellow Cradle Moon – 13km with 408m ascent

Yellow SpookHuis Long – 26km with 498m ascent

Yellow SpookHuis Short – 17km with 458m ascent

Red – 18km with 598m ascent

Pink has very little singletrack and is ideal for Beginners. Blue, Yellow and Red are mostly singletrack and offer stimulating rides for all levels of rider. Blue and Yellow offer the ideal combination ride for most reasonably fit, reasonably skilled riders, while Red is recommended only for strong, skilled riders.

Off the bike

Game drive, boat cruise, paddling, swimming and fly fishing are all options at Cradle Moon. Drinks on the deck over the dam should be considered an activity too… Because it’s only a 30-minute drive from northern Johannesburg, most just arrive, ride and dash home, but consider staying overnight to experience the venue completely.

Summary

With the large dam and the interesting dam wall, as well as surrounding hills and variety of game, you won’t find a more scenic place to ride a mountain bike in Gauteng. The mountain bike trails are well-maintained and stimulating for all levels of rider.

Epic trails for mid-level to advanced riders, I love riding Cradle Moon. I like to do the Blue, Yellow and sometimes Red consecutively, as its the best of flow, tech and trail. Best part about it is you are really cycling with wildlife when doing this trail.

Cradle Moon has been developed into a great MTB, trail running and walking venue

Cradlemoon is a great place to ride. Super safe and if you need more kms - can slip out and ride the cradle trail loop as well. Decent climbing and well maintained trails. Bonus is the zebra that casually stroll by as you’re riding Staff are super friendly - and willing to lend a helping hand when you leave tools at home by accident! Only thing I would change is to have a food truck or two for post ride snacks - restaurants are always full with a long waiting line

Beautiful place to ride between African wild animals. The trails are amazing and in a fair condition.

I've always enjoyed Cradle Moon but I must say, unless they sort out the issue with both pedestrians and MTB's using a lot of the same paths, I'm not going back. The trails are really nicely done with basic, intermediate as well as advanced sections, but having pedestrians walking where you HAVE to ride (and with their backs to you) creates animosity from them as well as not allowing MTBers to ride as quickly as they would like to. Oh - and they really need to do some trail maintenance on the red route, LOTS and LOTS of blackjacks and pretty overgrown.

Red route was a bit muddy , expected after recent rains perhaps also the reason for trails not being cut clear on the red route. Route markings also not 💯 on top of red route. Looked around to find markings had been knocked down.

Great trails. Interesting and fun to ride. Shared trails with hikers can be super frustrating.

Beautiful setting to ride in. Trails are interesting and one can add-in challenging sections easily to suit your skill level. Some routes share the hiking trail which causes congestion on weekends. Worth exploring all the different sections as they all have something different to offer. A trail worth returning to over and over.

Interesting trail park with great variety. Bonus is riding amongst White Rhino. Spookhuis is added fun.

I rode the cradle MTB trails for the 1st time today. I typically ride the loop with my RB and today I rode for the 1st time with my MTB. It was challenging. Some the segments were very narrow and will require a bit more experience. I didn't have a chance to enjoy the view. That's how challenging it was.

Trail was soaked from previous nights rain, made for a slippery and muddy ride but awesome trail.
